Happy Fall ya’ll! I know, I know, I am from the Midwest and have absolutely no right to use that amazing southern slang. But I did…so what are you going to do about it now? Nothing, because it so perfectly exemplifies this month’s topic. The new age super power of saying it all AND creating your own ridiculous sounding words. All because some of the age-old “writing standards” and English invasion of “what thou is correct” is falling by the wayside and allowing more room for creativity.
Thank Satan - only because it’s spooky season though.
In fact, the dictionary is growing at mega warp speed due to the increase in popularized slang and the very necessary need to continue to understand one another as our culture shifts and expands into a more welcoming society of word warriors. One of my very faves to enter dictionaries recently is “hangry”... I mean, the perfect balance of two words explains so much about so many of us and our basic need for food. And the consequences of not eating…
So, as a writer, a business-owner, a creative, or whoever you are, celebrate and innovate our growing freedoms of word curation. My only words of wisdom here is to know your stuff; is the base word offensive? What’s the history of the core word? Our goal in jack-o-lanterning up language isn’t to draw more divisiveness but to promote individualism.
Now, go get crack-a-lackin’ and share some of your genius with us all in the comments below!
